5 Signs That It’s Time To Replace Your Conservatory Roof

28th November, 2016 posted in by Leila Jackson

As time goes by, you might start to notice that your conservatory isn’t as full of life as it once was.

It might be looking a little rough around the edges or perhaps the roof has some damage which is causing problems in your home.

replace

Depending on the product, material and workmanship, the average conservatory has a lifespan of about 10 – 20 years. So, they don’t last forever.

If your conservatory is getting on a bit, there’s a good chance its roof may need replaced with a more modern product that’s durable and created to stand the test of time.

Here are some signs to look out for, which will tell you if your conservatory roof needs to be replaced.

1. Leaking

If you spot signs of leaking or water damage in your conservatory, your roof needs replaced immediately. If the leak is coming from the roof itself, rather than from frames, it is likely that damage has been building gradually over time because of slipped panels, loose cappings, leaking vents or sealant problems.

So, even if you are able to temporarily repair or cover the leaking area, this unlikely to resolve the problem entirely.

Most leaking in conservatories occurs due to poor quality roofing material which degrades over the years. Most often this happens when your conservatory roof is made of polycarbonate materials which warp due to temperature fluctuations.

2. Condensation

Condensation is a common problem in conservatories (you can read our blog about conservatory condensation here). And although it seems like a harmless source of frustration, condensation can lead to mould which is extremely harmful to the lungs. If you have a persistent condensation problem in your conservatory, you need to consider replacing your roof.

3. Drafts Of Cold Air

If there’s a draft in your conservatory, this is a sure sign that it needs replacing. This will make the room uninhabitable in winter and is extremely inefficient in terms of energy consumption. Similar to leaks, drafts can come about for a number of reasons. In most cases, it happens because of sealant not be properly implemented or simply wearing over time.

There’s also a chance that it could be due to poor glazing, as conservatories are typically single glazed.

If the draft is not coming from the edges of your conservatory or any doors or windows, there could be a crack or damage to the roof which is letting cold air in.

4. Damage To Frames And Exterior Wear And Tear

If your conservatory looks like it’s seen better days, it probably has. If your frames are cracked or blistered and if there’s dark spots, scum and algae on the walls or roof, your conservatory probably needs a refresh. This kind of wear and tear is usually a visual signal that there are deeper structural, insulation or ventilation problems that need to be addressed before bigger problems ensue.

5. You’re Just Not Spending Any Time In Your Conservatory

A conservatory should be enjoyed. For most people, a conservatory is an investment and a positive addition to the home. If you’re not spending any time in your conservatory because it’s too cold, too warm, or generally uncomfortable, you should consider replacing your roof to transform it into a room you absolutely love.

If you recognise any of these signs, we strongly recommend considering replacing your conservatory roof.

As mentioned, this signs are usually symptomatic of deeper problems within your conservatory which will simply worsen over time if ignored.
